DFI India 2019

Dr. Amy Cerato

Thursday, 20 August 2020 │ 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM IST

Speaker: Dr. Amy Cerato, University of Oklahoma

Title: Dynamic and Cyclic Applications of Grouped Helical Piles

Helical piles have been used in seismic zones throughout the world for over half a century, and in specific countries, namely New Zealand and Japan, their use is well accepted and well codified, even in highly liquefiable areas.  This presentation will focus specifically on grouped helical pile damping characteristics in both small and large shakes, the influence of frequency and slenderness ratio on damping and the difference in behavior of the pile- structure connections. Title: EFFC-DFI Guides to Tremie Concrete, Support Fluids and Work Platforms for Deep Foundations

This webinar will comprise two 30-minute presentations on the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) and DFI working group projects on the recent collaboration and development of design guidance for tremie concrete and support fluids for deep foundations.  The presentation will highlight the joint society working group activities and partnership involved in developing the internationally-accepted, industry-driven guidance and provide an overview of the guidance documents.  The tremie guide provides information on the performance, mix design process, and methods used to test fresh concrete and support fluids.  The tremie guide addresses concrete rheology, mix design, reinforcement detailing, concrete cover, and good practice rules for placement and testing of fresh concrete.  The support fluid guide overviews the current understanding on bentonite, other clays, polymers and blended systems, including the advantages and limitations to allow informed selection of the optimum technical solutions.

Working platforms are used by everyone that accesses a site, so the considerations highlighted in the document apply equally to all those involved. A properly designed and installed working platform benefits all and will enhance the efficient working of a site as well as ensuring a safe environment. READ BIOS

Thursday, 22 October 2020 │ 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM IST- ISSMGE TC 211

Speaker:  Dr. Nicolas Denies and Prof. Noel Huybrechts, Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI)

Title: Deep Mixing Equipment and Field of Applications of the Deep Mixing Method

The Chair and Secretary of ISSMGE's TC211 Committee on Ground Improvement will provide an overview of the various deep mixing methods (DMM) used to perform soil-cement columns, soil mix panels, soil mix trenches and mass stabilization.  Various ground improvement patterns that can be created with DMM will be discussed and typical applications will be presented, including soil reinforcement as an alternative to pile groups, retaining walls, cut-off walls, dike reinforcement, in situ remediation, liquefaction risk mitigation, and underpinning.  Literature references for each system and application will be provided. Prof. Noel Huybrechts

Dr. Amy Cerato

Cerato is the Rapp Foundation Presidential Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. She researches and consults in geotechnical engineering, specifically focusing on soil stabilization, expansive soil mitigation and foundation design in problematic soils. She is a registered professional engineer in Oklahoma. She is the author of more than 60 technical papers and the recipient of the 2009 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and 2008 National Science Foundation CAREER award. She is a member of the DFI Helical Pile and Tiebacks Committee and the ASCE Geo-Institute Committee of Engineering Geology and Site Characterization.

Dr. Karsten Beckhaus

Karsten Beckhaus obtained his University degree in Civil Engineering, and later his doctoral degree, from the Technical University in Munich, Germany. He is now leading the Technical Services department of BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH which assists BAUER’s projects worldwide, in specialist geotechnical, measuring & surveying, and material technology tasks as well as with methods engineering. Karsten has been involved in the Piling and Foundation Industry for 17 years and has been working in the structural engineering business for more than 25 years. Karsten also works on standardization, amongst others in particular for standards on design and execution of special geotechnical works, and on design and testing of concrete. On behalf of the European Federation of Foundation Contractors Karsten has been leading the joint EFFC/DFI Concrete Task Group which published the first “Tremie Guide” in 2016 and a comprehensive second edition in 2018 which shall support to get better concrete to construction sites for deep piles and diaphragm walls in order to gain a high quality of the final product. In a direct liaison he also contributes to the current work of the EFFC/DFI Support Fluid Task Group producing a 2nd edition of a Fluids Guide complementing the practice recommendations.

Mr. Christophe Justino

Christophe obtained his master’s degree in Materials chemistry from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France. He is now leading manager of the materials department at Soletanche Bachy International. He has 15 years’ experience on materials for geotechnical works on an international scale, involving deep foundation works providing technical assistance and expertise. The scope of Christophe’s works ranges from concrete technology, designing grout materials, and Support fluids for deep foundation and tunneling.

Christophe also works on standardization group committee for standards on execution of special geotechnical works, and on design and testing of concrete. On behalf of the European Federation of Foundation Contractors, Christophe is leading the joint EFFC/DFI Support fluids Task Group which published Edition 1 of Support fluids guide for deep foundations released in 2019 and is currently performing a field research study to improve industry knowledge and management of support fluids for higher quality of the final product. He is also active member of the EFFC/DFI Concrete Task Group.

Mr. Peter Faust

Peter Faust has over 25 years of professional experience in the design and construction of foundations. He graduated from Technical University Graz in Austria with a Masters in Geotechnical Engineering. After being involved in project management and engineering of large and complex infrastructure projects in Asia and Europe he did join Malcolm in 2006. Since then he has been involved in the design and construction of numerous foundation projects throughout the entire US. He serves as DFI’s Trustee.
